What does a Neuro Physio assessment and  involve?

A neuro physio assessment is often complex because it involves a holistic evaluation that extends beyond mere physical ability. A neuro assessment frequently involves more than one professional and the person living with the neurological condition, along with their family or carers to identify and deliver a suitable care plan. A neuro assessment frequently includes:

A physical evaluation: Assessing muscle strength, tone, range of motion, balance, coordination, posture, and gait analysis.

A sensory assessment: Evaluating how well a person can interpret and respond to sensory input (touch, temperature, proprioception, vision, etc.), as neurological conditions can significantly impair these pathways.

A cognitive screen: As impairments in memory, attention, problem-solving skills, and executive functions can directly impact a person’s ability to learn new movement strategies and engage in therapy, it is essential that a cognitive assessment is considered.

An assessment of a person’s fatigue levels: Fatigue is a common and often disabling symptom in many neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or post-stroke and therefore needs to be considered when structuring a rehabilitation programme.

Consideration of psychosocial factors: Considering mood, emotional well-being, and social support networks is important as these factors can influence motivation, treatment options,  and recovery outcomes.

With your permission,  the physio may speak to your Consultant, GP, or another health or Social Care professional to ensure that you receive a cohesive approach to your care. They may also involve significant others, for example your spouse, wider family, or carers to support them to support you. For example, this may be to see how they currently assist you and to show them other strategies that may help. For example, by teaching them how to help you to get in and out of bed or the car or training them to deliver an exercise programme whether that be on land (e.g. at home or in the gym) or in a pool.
