Neuro physio is an abbreviation for neurological physiotherapy, which is a specialised area of physical therapy dedicated to the assessment and treatment of people with conditions that affect the nervous system. This may be as a result of physical damage or disease caused by a stroke, head injury, tumour, infection, or degenerative disease which can lead to problems such as muscle weakness, sensory issues, spasticity, mobility problems, coordination difficulties, and reduced independence.
While regular (musculoskeletal) physiotherapy addresses conditions primarily affecting muscles, joints, and bones, for example sprains, strains, tears, back pain, and arthritis which often caused by injury, overuse, or degenerative changes, neurological physiotherapy focuses on issues that arise from damage to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or peripheral nervous system (nerves); globally known as the nervous system.
Recovery after a neurological event can often be slow. This can unfortunately lead to people living with a neurological condition being told they have reached a plateau in their recovery which often discourages them from continuing their rehab journey. Current research shows that plateaus in neuro rehabilitation do not signify the end of recovery, but rather a sign that the rehabilitation approach may need adjustment in order to help the brain rewire itself (neuroplasticity).
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to modify its structure and function in response to experience, learning, injury, or intervention. The brain's ability to rewire itself continues throughout life, meaning progress is possible even years after the initial injury, with a consistent and targeted approach. Yes, progress can often be subtle, but it can involve many areas of function including, motor, sensory, cognitive, mental well-being), not just big physical changes.
Valley Physio aims to provide an individualised neuro rehabilitation programme that combines a thorough assessment, specialist treatments, and a holistic approach to care to help you to achieve your personal goals and enhance your quality of life however long the journey.
